Waste Not, Want Trim!

Sustainable Cannabutter Recipe

DOPE is all about being sustainable. I mean, last year I wrote about composting your roaches in worm bins, for goodness’ sake! But before you toss that leftover trim to the worms, hold up—let’s put our Martha Stewart aprons on and make some good things!

First off, in order to bake those infamous pot brownies, you’ll need to create cannabis butter. This means decarboxylating your cannabis trim. That’s a fancy word for roasting cannabis in the oven, or heating it to release THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis. Don’t worry, decarboxylating your cannabis it is not nearly as difficult as trying to say the word “decarboxylation”!

What You Need:

  • Fresh trim or dry trim/shake
  • Aluminum foil
  • Pyrex baking dish
  • Cheesecloth
  • Rubber band
  • Wide mouth mason jar
  • Mini Crock-Pot (yes, this is a thing)

Every little leaf and stem left over from your homegrown cannabis harvest, as well as any shake left behind in your Jar O’ Buds.

Heavy duty aluminum foil:

You’re going to need aluminum foil, and I’m talking the name brand: Heavy Duty Reynolds Wrap. Do not skimp around with cheap foil from the discount store. You’ll regret it!

A 13” Pyrex Dish

Pyrex is an oven-safe glass baking dish. Think of the dish you make a tuna casserole in.

I like “Organic Wizzard” Unbleached Organic Cotton Cheesecloth.

A 2 Quart Crock-Pot

This is the teeny tiny one—the size a Smurf might use, not the Sunday roast size.

Sustainable Cannabutter Recipe

Preheat the oven to 240°F or 116°C.

Crumble (don’t pulverize) your cannabis using a coffee bean grinder, or just break it up so the bits are all about the same size. Place the crumbled cannabis evenly in the baking dish, about ½” to ¾” deep.

Cover the dish tightly with your Heavy Duty aluminum foil.

Bake dry cannabis for about 60 minutes; bake fresh trim for two hours.

Turn the oven off and let the cannabis cool in the oven, but DO NOT remove the foil.

When the cannabis is completely cool, remove from the oven.

Get out the Itty Bitty Crock-Pot.

Put a pound of butter in the Crock-Pot with one ounce of decarboxylated cannabis and one cup of water. (That’s four sticks of butter for those not used to playing Betty Crocker in the kitchen, and about two tablespoons/28 grams of cannabis.)

Turn the Crock-Pot on low for 6-12 hours. Go to sleep, go to work, or binge Netflix!

Get out your wide mouth mason jar and secure the cheesecloth with a rubber band around the rim. Strain, and boom: homemade cannabis butter!

Use the cannabutter as you would normally use butter in any baking recipe! Brownies, ahoy!
